MOBILE, Ala. - Facing uncharacteristic temps for March in South Alabama, the UWG women's golf team never blinked on Monday, firing rounds of 299 and 300 to claim the day one lead of the Magnolia Collegiate at RTJ Magnolia Grove in Mobile.
Temps were dropping all day and the wind was howling, yet still the Wolves led the field in total birdies by five, rolling in 25 combined birdies with the flat stick on Monday.
UWG goes into the final round on Tuesday tied with fellow ASUN member Lipscomb for the team lead. The Bisons shot 292 and 307 in their Monday action and the two teams enjoy a slim, two-stroke advantage over tournament host South Alabama.
Two Wolves are in the top-five after Monday's action as Emma Baier is tied for the individual lead and Hannah Barrett sits in fourth with 18 holes to play.
Baier is in a three-way tie for first after rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday. The junior's opening round featured four birdies and six bogeys while she rolled in two more birdies in the afternoon and limited the birdies to shoot one-over in the second round.
In the first round, it was Barrett who had the advantage, also shooting a one-over 73 with two birdies. The junior then backed that up with a 75 in the second round and is one shot behind Baier and four shots off the lead.
Sofia Mondragon is in 18th place after 36 holes as she shot rounds of 73 and 79. The sophomore had three birdies in the first round and two in the second.
Next on the leaderboard is Sophie Dhaliwal who is in 37th place after rounds of 79 and 76 on Monday. Keira Wolf, who was playing in her first tournament of the spring season, shot rounds of 81 and 76 and begins the final day in 47th place.
Another ASUN foe, Stetson is lurking in fourth place while James Madison rounds out the top five.
It's a strong field as UWG entered the event ranked behind eight of the other 11 Division I teams in the field.
The final round is set for tomorrow from RTJ Magnolia Grove in Mobile.
