GLENCOE, Ala. - Sofia Mondragon sits in third place individually and the Wolves are tied for ninth following 18 holes of action at the Chris Banister Golf Classic hosted by Jax State at the RTJ Silver Lakes.
Mondragon, who rolled in five birdies on the day, finished with an even-par round of 72 and is two shots off of the lead. The sophomore got off to a hot start with four birdies in her first five holes and then birdied her 18th hole of the day to get back to even and begins tomorrow one shot behind Yang Tai of Indiana State in second and two shots behind the leader, Bradley's Caroline McConnell.
As a team, UWG is in 12th place after an opening round 311.
Behind Mondragon was the duo of Emma Baier and Sophie Dhaliwal, whose rounds of 78 have them tied for 36th with two rounds remaining.
Hannah Barrett and Anna Olesen, who were coming off of top-20 finishes in the last event, both struggled and finished with uncharacteristic rounds of 82, tying them for 64th place.
No. 21 Tennessee leads the field after an opening round 291. The Lady Vols enjoy a 12-stroke advantage with 36 holes to play. UWG is just one shot out of the top 10 as 10th place is currently a tie between Troy and UAB at 310. The Wolves are just four shots out of the top-five.
The second of three rounds is set for tomorrow from RTJ Silver Lakes in Glencoe, Alabama.
