EATONTON, Ga. - The UWG men's golf team opened play on Friday at the Linger Longer Invitational, shooting a first round 311 at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
UWG is in 18th place against a strong field that featured 11 of the nation's top-100 programs. Georgia, the 35th-ranked team in the country leads the tournament, followed by Mercer, Ohio State, and no. 16 Alabama.
Milton Wallin, had a dream start as the sophomore started at 10, and made par at his opening hole and then rattled off four birdies in a row. He then played the last three of his front nine in three-over before settling back down and adding birdie at his 11th hole to get back to two-under. Wallin then made back-to-back bogeys to finish his round and end with an even-par 72.
It was an even-par 72 as well from Thomas Romani on Friday. After making pars on his first six holes, Romani turned in one under and then made two bogeys and a birdie on his way in to finish even par.
Wallin and Romani are tied for 45th heading into round two.
Jeremy Edmunds shot an 83 in his opening round and is in 105th place.
Luke Able and Max Winnersjo both shot 84 on Friday and are in 106th place. Able birdied his third hole of the day and turned at one-over before having his round derailed on his second nine, shooting 11-over on his second nine. Winnersjo got off to a shaky start with a bogey on his opening hole and then finished with two birdies on the round.
The second round from Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee is set for tomorrow.
