ASUN Action Continues in Jacksonville

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball stays on the road, headed back to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins in the first ASUN series rematch of the season. Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium.

The Wolves' (11-26, 8-7 ASUN) journey back through conference play opens with a red-hot Dolphins team (18-18, 6-9 ASUN) that the Pack claimed a 2-1 series victory at Cole Field a little more than a month ago.

Over the past two weeks, JU has recorded back-to-back ASUN series victories and defeated a pair of top-25 teams, No. 21 Florida and, coincidentally, the following week's No. 21, UCF.

Looking at this weekend's matchup, West Georgia's pitching rotation is expected to look the same as it has been throughout conference play.

Sophomore righty Maverick Torres will likely make his ninth start of the season in the opener. Earning his first-ever win as a Wolf against Jacksonville in the last matchup, Torres has since added one more win to put his record at 2-4. He has also posted a 6.69 ERA and 31 strikeouts.

West Georgia's ERA leader, Lex Kenny, will likely make his ninth start of the year on Saturday. Through the first two months of play, the senior righty has posted a team-best and second-best in conference 2.85 ERA, rung up a team-high 40 batters and recorded a 4-3 record. Notably, one of his wins was over JU in the last matchup.

Closing out the majority of UWG series this season and expected to be tasked with this role again on Sunday is redshirt senior Luke Ridley. The righty is coming off a statement performance in which he struck out a personal best eight batters through a career-high seven innings to earn a victory over North Florida. Ridley now posts a 3-1 record, 37 strikeouts and a 6.28 ERA.

With these three pushing the pace, UWG posts a 5.36 ERA in ASUN play. On the other side, JU posts a 4.47 ERA against conference competition.

While JU has not announced who they are starting, going off game logs, it will likely be lefty Alex Walsh who will get the nod on Friday. Through nine starts, Walsh has recorded a 4.11 ERA and 43 strikeouts. He opened the season winning three straight games and has since earned two more to bring his season record to 5-3.

If JU sticks with what they have done this year, game two should see righty Payton Waters make his eighth start. Currently, he posts a 7.56 ERA, recorded 18 strikeouts and has a 0-5 record.

UWG will close out the series facing another lefty, Brendan Holland. Through nine starts, the graduate student posts a 3.02 ERA, 45 strikeouts and a 2-4 record. Notably, Holland held FGCU scoreless and struck out seven batters through seven frames to earn his first ASUN win.

Moving to the batter's box, West Georgia has averaged just over six runs per game while recording a .298 team batting average, .380 on-base percentage and a .417 slugging percentage in conference play. JU has averaged 4.73 runs, posting a .231 team batting average, .327 on-base percentage and a .306 slugging percentage.

Continuing to push the pace at the plate for UWG is third baseman Patrick McCullough. With only a month of play left in the regular season, the senior leads the team in batting average (.376), OPS (.963), slugging (.557), hits (56), runs (28), doubles (8) and triples (2). These figures rank McCullough third in the ASUN in batting average, fourth in hits and ninth in triples. The infielder also boasts that he has reached base in the last 18 games.

For the Dolphins, infielder Roger Vergara has been leading the way in the batter's box. Currently the only starter with a .300 or better batting average, Vergara leads the team in average (.329), hits (48), runs (31) and multi-hit games (13). The ECU transfer led the Dolphins with a pair of four-hit performances, highlighted by a career-best seven RBI game, in the last series against West Georgia.

If you are unable to make the trip down to Jacksonville, all three games are streaming live on ESPN+. Links to video and live stats are available on the UWG baseball schedule.  Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium.
