ASUN Action Continues For UWG at Cole Field

4/8/2026 1:52:00 PM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball hosts North Florida this weekend for a three-game ASUN series spanning Friday through Sunday.

Coming off its second consecutive conference series victory, the Wolves (10-23, 7-5 ASUN) welcome the top-ranked UNF Ospreys (18-14, 10-5 ASUN) to Cole Field with the hopes of handing the visitors its first ASUN series loss of the season.

Currently, the Wolves sit right behind the Ospreys in second place of the Graphite Division.

The all-time series stands at 3-3 after both teams took 2-1 series victories over each other last season.

At the plate, West Georgia has averaged 5.18 runs per game while posting a .255 batting average, .340 on base percentage and a .390 slugging percentage this year. On the other side, UNF has averaged 6.18 runs per game while posting a .264 batting average, .376 on base percentage and a .424 slugging percentage.

Since becoming a mainstay in the UWG starting lineup, shortstop Blane Schmitt has been on a tear in the batter's box. In 50 at-bats, the junior has recorded a .360 batting average with 18 hits, nine runs and three RBIs. Schmitt is currently riding a team-best seven-game hitting streak that has featured three multi-hit performances.

Speaking of streaks, third baseman Patrick McCullough is currently riding a team-high 14-game reached base streak. The senior also leads the Wolves in hits (50), runs (26), doubles (7), triples (2), batting average (.373) and OPS (.970). He also tallied a team-high 14 multi-hit performances this season.

Looking at the Ospreys, junior shortstop Mathew Farner leads UNF in hits (36), runs (34), RBIs (28), homers (nine) and OPS (1.008). Going over his game logs, Farner opened the season recording a hit in the first eight games. Farner has recently fallen into his biggest slump of the season, so be on the lookout for the shortstop to get back on track this weekend.

On the mound, UWG posts an 8.63 team ERA while the Ospreys rank second in the ASUN with a 5.11 team ERA.

West Georgia is expected to go with the same pitching rotation that fans have seen throughout conference play. Sophomore righty Maverick Torres is expected to make his eighth start in the series opener. Totaling 34 frames across 11 appearances, Toress posts a 7.15 ERA, a 2-4 record and has punched out 30 batters. Senior righty Lex Kenny will be making his eighth start in game two. In nine appearances, Kenny posts a team-best, second in the ASUN 2.49 ERA, a 4-2 record and has recorded 36 strikeouts. Redshirt senior Luke Ridley is also expected to make his eighth start of the season in the series finale. Through seven games, the right-handed pitcher has recorded a 7.11 ERA, a 1-1 record and 29 strikeouts.

Outside of starting pitchers, UWG fans should expect junior Zane Wright and redshirt junior Davis Williams on the mound at some point this weekend. Both of these Wolves have worked their way into serving as the primary relief pitchers for UWG. Pitching in 15 games, Wright has posted a 9.45 ERA, earned a team-high four saves and has struck out 28 batters. Pitching in a team-high 16 games, Williams has recorded a stellar 1.59 ERA and struck out 14 batters. Remarkably, Williams has held opponents scoreless in 13 of his 16 appearances.

Despite not announcing their starters yet, UNF has gone with redshirt junior Dakota Stone in three of their four ASUN series openers. Through eight appearances, the lefty pitcher has led the Ospreys with a 4-2 record, a 2.80 ERA and 53 strikeouts. These figures rank Stone second in the ASUN in strikeouts and third in ERA. Like with Stone, sophomore righty Trevor Nikolis has served as the Ospreys game two starter in three ASUN series. Through nine appearances, Nikolis posts a 2-1 record, 4.61 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Sophomore righty Ryan Furey has been the UNF series closer in half of their conference clashes. Through 10 games, Furey posts a 1-1 record, 4.40 ERA and 17 strikeouts.

First pitch from Cole Field on Friday is set for 6 p.m. Game one and three will stream live via the UWG Athletics webpage. All live coverage links are tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.
