Nazim Breaks 43-Year-Old Record in Starkville

STARKVILLE, MS.- West Georgia wrapped up competition at the Maroon and White Tune Up with a strong final day, totaling 12 top-five finishes, one event victory, and a school record in its final meet before the ASUN Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jumps, Vaults, & Throws
West Georgia opened day two with a solid showing in the field events, highlighted by multiple top-five finishes and a record-breaking performance. In the high jump, Isaiah McMichael led the way with a third-place finish, clearing 1.95m, while Blake Davis followed closely at 1.90m and finished second among freshmen competitors.

Gavin Barlow delivered the Wolves' lone event win of the meet, capturing first place in the long jump with a mark of 7.43m. Godsfavor Adenuga added a fourth-place finish in the event with a jump of 7.09m. The triple jump saw another pair of top-five finishes for UWG, as Adenuga placed fourth at 14.19m and Marcus Thompson Jr. followed in fifth at 13.74m. Ricky Griffin narrowly missed the top five with a mark of 13.65m.

Kareem Nazim highlighted the pole vault group with a record-setting performance, clearing 4.96m to finish fifth and break the UWG school record previously set in 1983 by Gary Parks. Shea Thiewes, Connor McLain, and Grayson Greene each cleared 4.41m to round out the event for the Wolves. In the javelin, Conner Changizi led the group with a throw of 43.64m, just outside the top five. Ethan Butler-Paige followed at 40.25m, and Matthew Brunner recorded a mark of 35.23m.

Sprints & Hurdles
On the track, West Georgia continued its momentum with several strong performances across sprint and hurdle events. In the 400m hurdles, Landon Chovanic secured a second-place finish with a time of 56.20, while Zachary Wiggins placed fourth at 57.21. Matt Strickland paced UWG in the 400m with a time of 48.48, followed by Jackson Connors at 50.22.

Barlow returned to the track in the 100m and narrowly missed his own school record, finishing fifth with a time of 10.47. Michael Willis (10.61) and Vaughn Dickenson Jr. (10.67) also posted strong efforts. In the 110m hurdles, Kellen Andrews led the group at 15.72, with Ishmeal Neblett just behind at 15.79. Brunner rounded out the event with a time of 16.33. Connors led the Wolves in the 200m with a time of 21.90, followed by Dickenson at 22.02 and Trey Campbell at 22.08.

Distance
The distance group added depth to the overall performance with several competitive finishes. In the 800m, Abenezer Woellore led the way with a time of 1:53.74, followed by Gabriel Wrye (1:56.89), Hyrum Smartt (1:57.29), and Evan Beasley (1:58.02).
In the 1500m, Felipe Barrios secured a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:12.33, while Daniel Murtagh crossed in 4:21.85.

Relays
West Georgia capped the meet with two strong relay performances. The 4x100m relay team of Michael Willis, Gavin Barlow, Trey Campbell, and Vaughn Dickenson Jr. placed second with a time of 40.46. In the 4x400m relay, the squad of Jackson Connors, Trey Campbell, Landon Chovanic, and Matt Strickland also secured a second-place finish, crossing the line in 3:25.67.

West Georgia will turn its attention to the postseason, competing at the ASUN Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida from May 14-16 to close out the 2026 season.
