PADUCAH, Ky. - Two rounds are in the books at The Velvet and the team atop the leaderboard through 36 holes is the West Georgia Wolves.
UWG's women's golf team shot rounds of 294 and 297 on Monday at the Country Club of Paducah and will sleep on a one-stroke lead heading into tomorrow's final round. Three Wolves are in the top-10 individually as UWG sits atop the 16-team field, one shot clear of West Florida and United Athletic Conference foe, Austin Peay.
"Today was obviously a very good day and the girls performed to a very high level and we're in an exciting position because of it," said head coach Will Snodgrass. "Having said that, we can be better, and will need to be better if we want to fend off strong competition and get a team title tomorrow."
Junior Sofia Mondragon leads the trio of top-10 Wolves after rounds of 72 and 73 put her in fourth place. Mondragon made two birdies and two bogeys in her even-par opening round and then rolled in three birdies in her one-over second. She is just two shots off of the individual lead.
In seventh place is Emma Baier who shot rounds of 73 and 74 on Monday. Baier rolled in three birdies in round one, and was one-under with two holes to play in round two before she ran into trouble to finish one-over in the round. One shot behind her is Sophie Dhaliwal who made five birdies over two round, carding an opening round 73 and a second round 75.
Alba Cáliz Rejas is tied for 19th after two rounds, shooting 76 and 75 on Monday with six total birdies. Rounding out the lineup was Anna Olesen who shot 82 and 81 and will start tomorrow in a 56th-place tie.
Behind West Florida and Austin Peay, UWG is also being chased by tournament host Murray State who is seven shots behind the Wolves. West Georgia has an 18-stroke lead over fellow UAC foe North Alabama who round out the top-five.
"We will need to be ready to compete from the first tee, and be able to close our rounds a little stronger," Snodgrass added. "We do that, and I like our chances!"
The final round is set for tomorrow morning with a 9:30 a.m. EST start from the Country Club of Paducah.
