CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2019 Gulf South Conference Tournament closed out yesterday with the West Georgia Wolves' run at the title coming up short in a 3-2 loss to the West Florida Argonauts. Two UWG players were recognized for their performance in the three matches this weekend, as senior Madi Fleming and freshman Tierra White were named to the All-Tournament Team, as voted by the coaches at the tournament.
White and Fleming had a tremendous week over the past seven days, as both were named First Team All-Gulf South Conference in the league's annual announcement. Fleming was also named Setter of the Year and White was named Freshman of the Year.
Fleming paved the way for the Wolves to average 11.4 kills per set through the 2019 tournament, as the senior averaged 9.50 assists per set on the weekend. Against AUM in the quarterfinal round, Fleming had 47 assists, then she dished out 49 assists in a dramatic 3-1 victory over Alabama Huntsville in the semifinals. Against West Florida on Sunday, she delivered on 37 assists in the five-set finals against West Florida.
White was as dominant as any other player at the 2019 Gulf South Conference tournament, delivering on 4.14 kills per set and coming away with 11 blocks. She had 21 kills with a .395 hitting percentage against AUM, then had six blocks and 19 kills with just three errors for a .444 hitting percentage against UAH in the semifinals. In the finals, White had 18 kills and three blocks for a total of 58 kills over the three games.
West Georgia will find out if the season will extend on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. with the release of the 2019 NCAA Division II Volleyball tournament bracket.
