Carrollton, GA - Playing Lincoln Memorial for the first time since the Railsplitters left the Gulf South Conference, the West Georgia Wolves put on a furious late-inning comeback, but fell just short 5-4 in the first game of a two-day series.
The comeback came after Lincoln Memorial built a 5-1 lead over the first 7 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, #
Stuart Drew# led off with a single, then promptly stole second. #
Brett Wright# followed with a single, giving the Wolves runners at first and third with RBI machine #
Andy Marinelli# at the plate. The UWG first baseman did not disappoint, delivering a single that scored Drew.
After a #
Josh Whitehead# walk to load the bases, catcher #
David Buchanan# sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Wright from third and pulling the Wolves to within two runs at 5-3. Marinelli and Whitehead moved over during the next at-bat on a wild pitch, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
In the ninth, the Wolves added another run, but with runners at first and third and two outs, #John Doolittle# struck out to end the final UWG threat and the game.
Drew, Marinelli and #Danny Bodziak# all had two hits in the game, with Marinelli driving in two of the Wolves' four runs. #
Alex Wilson# pitched well in a starting role, but lost his second game of the season. Wilson went 6.2 innings, allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four without a walk.
The Wolves and Railsplitters will play a solo game tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Cole Field.
