Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves won their second straight Gulf South Conference series on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion, as the Wolves used some late-game heroics from a pair of captains to take a 4-3 victory over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
The win marks the second straight series where West Georgia was defeated by a run-rule in the series opener, only to win the final two games. But in Saturday's victory, things looked to be in hand until the final inning and even until the final out.
West Georgia's second series win marks the first time the Wolves have won two Gulf South Conference series in a season since 2007 and the most conference wins since the Wolves had six wins in that same year.
The Chargers broke through for the first run in the game on an Eric Deese RBI single in the top of the fourth. UAH added another run in the top of the fifth and looked as if they were cruising, as the Alabama-Huntsville starter had given up but two hits until that point.
But in the bottom of the fifth, All-American candidate #
Stuart Drew# led off the inning with a single, then moved to third on #
Andy Marinelli#'s double two batters later. Freshman #
Justin Croft# then came in as a pinch-hitter for senior #
Josh Whitehead# and belted a double to left-center, scoring both runs and tying the game.
Croft came home two batters later on a #
Bradford Mattox# double, giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth. Freshman lefty #
Justin Key# had done a solid job until that point, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts, but head coach
Skip Fite brought in #
Randall Wright# for a change of pace.
The move was a solid one, as Wright closed the door for the next three innings on the Chargers, holding the UAH lineup at bay while #
Brett Wright# gave his pitcher a little breathing room by bringing senior third baseman #
Nick Sperounis# home on a single in the sixth for a 4-2 lead.
In the ninth, the fireworks began, as Deese opened the inning with a single. On the pitch,
Randall Wright felt something in his elbow, forcing Fite to go to senior #
Keith Manley# out of the bullpen. Manley gave up a few hits and a run that was charged to Wright, but worked himself into a situation where he had two outs and runners on first and second with pinch hitter Ben Carr up.
Carr delivered a single to right field with catcher Justin Riddle on second and Wright came up firing. His ball hit UWG catcher #
David Buchanan# in the numbers and the senior captain was right there with the tag on Riddle to end the game and preserve the win.
Key picked up his first win of his collegiate career in the game and Manley earned the save for the Wolves. Drew was the only UWG player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 for the game with a run scored. Croft came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
The Wolves move to 18-26 overall on the season and 5-12 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia travels to North Georgia on Tuesday, then take on Columbus State in the home finale on Wednesday before closing out the regular season at Valdosta State next weekend.
