Gameday Central
Carrollton, GA - With just seven games played thus far in the 2014 season, Gulf South Conference play will begin this weekend, as the Alabama Huntsville Chargers travel to Carrollton for the second straight season to play a three-game series at Cole Field. Last year's series was cut short due to rain, but the Wolves took both games, then West Georgia outdueled the Chargers again at the Gulf South Conference tournament in May.
Wolves at a Glance
West Georgia enters the series reeling from a tough series loss to Georgia Regents last weekend. The Wolves fell in the first and third games of the three-game set by a combined 10-2. In a stark contrast, the lone win on the weekend came in a 13-4 rout in the middle game. Freshman
Colton Duttweiler tossed a gem, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work while scattering seven hits to pick up his first collegiate victory. In five of the Wolves' seven games, at least one team has scored in double-figures, with UWG doing that three times. The return of senior catcher
Galen Smith has given the Wolves a boost, as he has not allowed a stolen base this year, but has thrown out four runners.
Chargers at a Glance
Alabama Huntsville comes into the first GSC weekend with a 5-2 record overall on the season, including three victories over Kentucky State by a combined 43-2. Last weekend, the Chargers went to Miami Shores, FL to take on the Barry Bucanneers, splitting two doubleheaders. The first day was a shutout split, as Tyler Howell opened the series with a 3-0 victory followed by an 8-0 loss in the second game. In every victory the Chargers have had this season, the opponent has scored a run or less. Both losses have come when an opponent scores eight or more runs.
