Gameday Central

Carrollton, GA
- With just seven games played thus far in the 2014 season, Gulf South Conference play will begin this weekend, as the Alabama Huntsville Chargers travel to Carrollton for the second straight season to play a three-game series at Cole Field. Last year's series was cut short due to rain, but the Wolves took both games, then West Georgia outdueled the Chargers again at the Gulf South Conference tournament in May.

Wolves at a Glance
West Georgia enters the series reeling from a tough series loss to Georgia Regents last weekend. The Wolves fell in the first and third games of the three-game set by a combined 10-2. In a stark contrast, the lone win on the weekend came in a 13-4 rout in the middle game. Freshman Colton Duttweiler tossed a gem, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work while scattering seven hits to pick up his first collegiate victory. In five of the Wolves' seven games, at least one team has scored in double-figures, with UWG doing that three times. The return of senior catcher Galen Smith has given the Wolves a boost, as he has not allowed a stolen base this year, but has thrown out four runners.

Chargers at a Glance
Alabama Huntsville comes into the first GSC weekend with a 5-2 record overall on the season, including three victories over Kentucky State by a combined 43-2. Last weekend, the Chargers went to Miami Shores, FL to take on the Barry Bucanneers, splitting two doubleheaders. The first day was a shutout split, as Tyler Howell opened the series with a 3-0 victory followed by an 8-0 loss in the second game. In every victory the Chargers have had this season, the opponent has scored a run or less. Both losses have come when an opponent scores eight or more runs.

Wolves Offense
As a team this season, the Wolves come into the first conference weekend with a .280 batting average on the year. Andrew Witte and Galen Smith lead the team with a .409 and .400 batting average, respectively. Smith has a .680 slugging percentage in his return to the diamond and Witte has nine hits and five RBI. Junior Troy Brown is hitting .320 on the year and has made the most of his time on base, leading the team with 13 runs scored. Freshman JoJo Underwood is hitting well thus far with a .370 batting average, where he is tied with Smith for the team lead with 10 hits on the year.

Chargers Offense
UAH and the Wolves are similar teams at the plate this season, as the Chargers are hitting .279 as a team on the year. Two players, Austin Sanders and Chandler Brock are hitting above .400 to lead the UAH offensive. Sanders has six games played and five starts and is hitting .471 with eight hits and five of those are of the extra-base variety. Brock, the reigning GSC Player of the Year, is hitting .409 with nine total hits. Of those nine hits, four have been doubles and two have been triples.

Previous Matchups
Last year's series was cut short due to rain, but the Wolves took both games in Carrollton, then West Georgia outdueled the Chargers again at the Gulf South Conference tournament in May. The big blow in Carrollton came on the mound from Cody Skinner last season and in the GSC tourney, it was Jamie Sexton who beat UAH 2-1.
