Wolves Split Doubleheader with UAH

Carrollton, GA - After a pitchers duel in game one of the series, The Wolves were trying to head into Sunday's doubleheader against University of Alabama Huntsville with a little more spring in their bats. However, pitching was again key in the close opening conference matchup.

Jamie Sexton took the hill for the West Georgia in game one of the doubleheader and was practically unhittable. Sexton pitched the complete game only allowing one run off three hits. The Preseason All-American in the South Region performed like he was in mid-April form picking up his first win of the season.

Sexton commanded the game from the very beginning sitting down the Chargers 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning. In the second inning, however, UAH got their first two batters on, but the Wolves' defense also helped set the tone as they turned a 5-6-3 double play to end the inning.

As the game developed into the later innings, it looked as it may be another pitching duel like the first game with a 0-0 game heading into the fifth inning, but the Chargers got on the scoreboard first off a groundout RBI from Colton Simbeck.

The Charger's lead did not hold for long though, as the Wolves scored one run each in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.

The first run came when Troy Brown singled through the right side of the infield with runners on first and third. The RBI single brought home Neal Gandee from third base after he advanced from second on a wild pitch.

After Sexton set down UAH in order in the top of the eighth inning, the Wolves took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when the Charger's second baseman couldn't field the ball cleanly off a hard hit ball from Harrison Waller. The error by UAH brought in Casey James and gave UWG a 2-1 lead.

Sexton came in to finish the complete game in the top of the ninth sitting down UAH in order, and giving the Wolves' their first conference victory of the season.

Game 2

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Wolves weren't as lucky as the UAH pitcher, Drew Eiland, pitched a magnificent 7-inning game to give the Chargers a 5-0 victory.

The lefty, Colton Duttweiler, took the mound for West Georgia, but didn't last long as Taylor Craft came in for relief in the third inning.

Alabama Huntsville threatened early in the first two innings as they racked up 4 quick hits. The Wolves got out of the jam in the top of the first, forcing the Chargers to leave two runners on base. Conversely, UAH was able to bring in one runner in the top of the second inning when Chris Brown hit a rope down the right field line scoring Blake Massey.

UAH tacked on one more run each in the top of the fourth and fifth off a wild pitch and a RBI double, respectively.

They then added two more runs in the top of the seventh to solidify their lead at 5-0.

UWG Baseball plays their next game this Tuesday evening against Georgia College at 3PM in Milledgeville, GA. West Georgia is 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
