Wolves Split Doubleheader with UWA

Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia traveled to Livingston, AL to challenge the University of West Alabama in the Wolves first Gulf South Conference games on the road of the 2014 season. The Wolves split the day, winning 3-2 in the opener behind a shining effort from starting pitcher Cody Skinner, then falling 2-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1
Cody Skinner took the hill in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday and had a masterly performance. Skinner pitched the entire game only surrendering one earned run off just five hits.

The Tigers got off to a quick start scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Richburg singled to center field. After moving over to third base on a wild pitch and a fly ball out, Richburg came into score off a throwing error. However, the Wolves cleaned up their defense, as that was their only error in the game.

West Georgia's offense got the ball rolling in the top of the fourth inning when Sumner McWhorter led off the inning with a single into right field. JoJo Underwood kept up his hot hitting with a single up the middle that made it first and second. Casey James then laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position. UWG then got some luck from the UWA pitching staff after a throwing error that scored McWhorter to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wolves took the lead in the top of the fifth inning when center fielder Shaquille Jackson reached first on a one out bunt. Troy Brown then followed him up with a single through the left side. After an error on the play by West Alabama's left fielder, Jackson was able to advance to third. McWhorter then to hit a deep fly to center that scored Jackson to give UWG a 2-1 lead.

Skinner's only earned run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Adam Chamblee homered to left field to tie the game at two a piece.

West Georgia took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning after playing some small ball. McWhorter led off the inning with a single to center field. Underwood then bunted him McWhorter to second. James then followed him up with a single through the right side that moved him to him to third. Then catcher Galen Smith was able to score McWhorter on a grounder to third that gave UWG a 3-2 lead that they would hold onto for their fifth win of the season.

Game 2
Cole Janousek got his first start of the year in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader. Janousek pitched five innings in the seven-inning game only allowing two runs off of five hits.

Zach Parks was on the mound for the Tigers. He came into the game with a 3-0 record and a remarkable 0.49 ERA. He continued his dominant pitching as he went 6.1 innings allowing no runs off of five hits. Parks also racked up seven strike outs in the game.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. It began when Luigi Mendez singled into right field. Mendez then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After surrendering a walk, Robinson singled off a bunt to load the bases. Richburg then picked up the only runs of the game off a single into left field that scored runners from second and third, and gave UWA a 2-0 lead, which they would hold onto to win the game.
