Wolves fall in marathon Sunday matchup

Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia went into Sunday's game looking to win their first Gulf South Conference series of the year after splitting with West Alabama on Saturday. The result was one of the longest games in UWG baseball history, going 15 inning with the Wovles falling 3-2.

Jamie Sexton took the hill for the Wolves for UWG on the afternoon against West Alabama. Sexton's last performance was a win against University of Alabama-Huntsville in which he went the length of the game and only allowed one earned run off of three hits.

This game was another remarkable outing for Sexton, as he pitched 12 innings, only allowing one run off of 7 hits. In the 12 innings, he showed excellent command, striking out 10 batters and not walking a single Tiger. Sexton also had six innings where he sat down UWA in order in the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, UWA reached the scoreboard first. Mendez singled up the middle and then advanced to second when Chamblee singled throught the left side. Rainey then came up and sinlged to left field scoring Mendez to make it a 1-0 game.

The Wolves reached the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning for the final run before extra innings. The rally began with a leadoff single by senior center fielder Shaquille Jackson. Jackson then took second with a stolen base and came around to score on Troy Brown's single that tied the contest at 1-1.

The next run wasn't scored until the top of the 14th inning when Jake Shirley singled with one out. Shirley advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs, and then came into score on an RBI single from Sumner McWhorter.

In the bottom half of the inning, Chamblee led off the inning with a single into center field. Chamblee was able to advance to second off a pitching error from UWG, then eventually moved to third on a groundout to second base. Williamon then came up with a clutch one out hit through the left side.

West Georgia had opportunities in extra innings as they left a total nine runners on base. However, he bottom half of the fifteenth would mark then end of the game that lasted over four hours.

UWA opened the inning with leadoff single to center field from Robinson. He moved over to second off a sacrifice bunt, and then eventually over to third base on a wild pitch. Chase Riemer then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases and set up a force play. Unfortunately for Riemer and the Wolves, Holgate singled to left field, scoring the winning run.

The Wolves move to 5-9 on the year and 2-4 in the GSC. Their next game is at home this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. against Georgia College.
