Carrollton, GA - West Georgia baseball set a record Thursday afternoon in Fairfield, Ala., as the Wolves scored the most runs of any team in the five-year tenure of head coach
Skip Fite, beating the Miles Golden Bears 23-12 in non-conference action.
The previous high for runs under Fite came on March 4, 2012, when his Wolves beat Christian Brothers 22-0 in Gulf South Conference play. Thursday's total could be a shot in the arm for a UWG squad that has been struggling at the plate this season, hovering at the .240 mark for team batting average over the past month.
Casey James started the day for the Wolves with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, followed by a
JoJo Underwood single that scored
Sumner McWhorter, giving West Georgia an early 2-0 advantage. But in the bottom of the first, Miles returned the favor, loading the bases and scoring a pair of runs off of starter
Chris Burdette to tie the game at 2-2.
West Georgia added a run in the third after
Shaquille Jackson picked up his first hit of the day, a triple down the right field line.
Troy Brown, who scored the Wolves' first run of the day, brought Jackson home with a sacrifice fly. That was a picture of things to come for Brown, who was 4-for-4 on the day with three runs scored and six RBI.
With one out and the bases loaded in the fourth, Jackson struck again with a double that brought home two runs for the Wolves, then Brown added an RBI single to give the Wolves a 6-2 advantage. With UWG holding a 10-3 lead, however, Miles began to fight back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs.
West Georgia responded with two more in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Bears came right back with five more runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 12-12 heading to the eighth.
That was when the floodgates opened for the UWG offense, as the first eight batters of the eighth reached base for West Georgia and the Wolves poured on 11 runs in the inning. Brown and
Jake Shirley had the biggest hits in the frame, as each had a bases-loaded triple, driving in six of the Wolves' 11 runs.
In addition to Brown, Jackson and Underwood each had four hits in the game. Jackson was 4-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBI, while Underwood was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Galen Smith was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI in the game.
As a team, the Wolves pounded out 23 runs on 19 hits in the game, drawing 12 walks.
Taylor Craft picked up the victory in the game, going 1 1/3 innings and allowing no runs to close out the game.
West Georgia moves to 11-15 on the season and will stay on the road this weekend, facing off with GSC power West Florida in Pensacola in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
