Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia baseball squad heads south to take on GSC power West Florida in a three-game series this weekend. The Wolves are coming off of a thrilling slugfest in Fairfield, Alabama on Thursday, as West Georgia took down Miles on the road by a 23-12 count. UWG pounded out 19 hits and walked 12 times en route to the eight-inning non-conference road victory.
Wolves at a Glance
West Georgia comes into Thursday's game with an overall record of 11-15 and a 5-6 Gulf South Conference record. The Wolves have been playing well in the past week, winning three straight coming into the very tough weekend against the 3rd-ranked West Florida Argonauts. Head coach
Skip Fite has more than 850 career victories and was named to the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame this past fall. West Georgia is 6-4 in the past 10 games, dating back to March 1 at Lee.
Wolves in the GSC
UWG comes into the weekend with a solid pitching staff in Gulf South Conference games this season. The Wolves have a 1.83 ERA against the GSC this season, including providing three conference pitchers of the week thus far.
Cole Janousek has the top ERA against league opponents at 1.12, followed by
Jamie Sexton at 1.65 and then
Cody Skinner at 1.88. The West Georgia bats have struggled, however, against the league pitchers with just a .201 batting average.
Shaquille Jackson leads the way at the plate with a .395 batting average in conference play.
Wolves Offense
Two UWG regulars have a batting average above .300 on the season, led by
Shaquille Jackson at .378. The senior speedster has 34 hits with four doubles and two triples from his leadoff spot. Freshman third baseman
JoJo Underwood has also hit well this year, coming into the weekend with a .338 batting average on the year. He also has four doubles this season and has a triple as well. He is tied for second with
Troy Brown and
Sumner McWhorter with 13 RBI on the year. Brown is the team's leader on the basepaths with 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts. The Wolves' RBI leader is catcher
Galen Smith, who has 14 RBI on the year with six extra base hits, including the only two home runs that any UWG player has this season. Both homers came on the first weekend of the season.
Cody Skinner on the Mound
The UWG pitching staff has been the bell cow of the 2014 season for the Wolves, led by senior
Cody Skinner.. The Ranburne native has been on fire of late and has lowered his ERA to 2.50 on the season with a 4-3 overall record. He won Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week once and has had multiple outings worthy of that honor. He is likely to start game one.
Jamie Sexton
In last week's doubleheader, the 2013 All-American started in the second game of the day, but he has been the Sunday starter for much of the season. Sexton comes into the weekend with a 4.14 ERA, but the Wolves are hitting below .200 when Sexton pitches this season.
Cole Janousek
All three UWG starters have won the GSC Pitcher of the Week honor this season, Janousek entering the weekend with a 3.92 ERA and a 1-3 record.
