Wolves Split With #5 Ranked Argos

Pensacola, FL - The University of West Georgia travelled to Pensacola to take on the #5 ranked Argonauts of West Florida. The Wolves won the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 9-3 but lost a close contested second game 2-0.

Dominant pitching performances in both games by West Georiga allowed them to stay in each of the two games, however in game one, West Georgia's offense got hot late and carried them to a victory.

Game One
Cody Skinner took the hill in the first game, and as expected, pitched another excellent game for the Wolves. Skinner pitched 6.2 innings, only allowing one run, and threw for a astonishing 131 pitches. It was a truly heroic effort on the mound for him that helped keep UWG in the game.

The Wolves' biggest inning came in the top of the eighth when they scored four runs off of just three hits. Bryan Dunson and Casey James both came up with clutch performances in the inning that guided West Georgia to their twelfth victory of the year.

The Wolves got on the scoreboard in the very first inning off of some careless play by the Argos. West Florida's defense was a little unlike themselves today, committing three errors in the ballgame. In the inning, Troy Brown got on with a walk, and eventually came into score after an error by their catcher.

West Florida answered right back in the bottom of the second, racking up four of their thirteen hits, and scoring two runs, to take a 2-1 lead. The bottom half of the second was Skinner's only real blemish in the game, as he only allowed one more run in the bottom of the seventh, after a runner he walked came into score after he was relieved by A.J. Sunstrom.

Sunstrom wrapped up the game for the Wolves, picking up his second win of the season. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs and striking out three Argo batters.

Game 2
The Wolves also played their hearts out in game two, but fell just short by a final score or 2-0. Jamie Sexton pitched the complete game only surrendering two earned runs through six innings and striking out four.

Compared to the first game, the bats were dead, as the West Georgia team only came away with three hits compared to eleven in the first game.

The only runs of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Argos were able to score two runs off of four hits.

The Wolves were able to get runners on base, but failed to bring them in. In the top of the third, West Georgia was just a couple steps away from their first run as Artemis Kadkhodaian doubled down the left field line, but a sharp, precise thrown from West Florida's shortstop gunned-out Galen Smith at home.

With today's doubleheader split, the Wolves move to 12-16 on the year and 6-7 in Gulf South Conference play. They will play the Argos in a series finale at 2:00ET.
