Wolves blast Stillman in midweek action

Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball team made quick work of the Stillman Tigers in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Cole Field, using timely hitting and a solid pitching effort from three newcomers to take down the Tigers 8-1.

The Wolves picked up a solid effort on the mound from freshman starter Colton Duttweiler, who went five innings, gave up a run on two hits and struck out one. Junior A.J. Sunstrom, in just his second appearance for West Georgia, pitched three scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts and Kyle Jamar finished the game in the ninth, allowing no runs on a hit.

Shaquille Jackson opened the scoring in the game, leading off the bottom of the first with an infield single, then scored on a double to the gap in right-center from Troy Brown. Jackson was 3-for-5 in the game with two runs scored, raising his team-leading batting average to .387 on the year.

After Stillman tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, the Wolves responded in the bottom half of the inning. JoJo Underwood started this rally with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Galen Smith. Casey James then followed with another single, scoring Underwood from second with what would be the game-winning run.

The Wolves added a run in the bottom of the fifth, with Cameron Eison and Shaquille Jackson leading off the frame with back-to-back singles. West Georgia loaded the bases in the inning, but the Tigers got Eison at home with the infield in for the first out. On the next pitch, Jackson came streaking home on a wild pitch to give the Wolves a 3-1 advantage. UWG loaded the bases again in the sixth, and three runs scored when Sumner McWhorter reached on an error, as the Wolves scored five in the inning to close out the scoring.

Brown and Underwood joined Jackson with multiple hits on the afternoon, as each was 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored. For Jackson, his first-inning single pushed his hitting streak to 12 games on the season thus far.

West Georgia plays host to Florida Tech in a three-game series this weekend, beginning Friday evening a 6 p.m. with Blue Diamond Day, where the first 200 students in attendance will receive free T-shirts. In addition, the Georgia Lottery will be back for the third installment in the Dollars for Scholars program, where one student will win a $1,000 scholarship. Students who sign up will also be enrolled for the $13,000 scholarship or a segway. That drawing will take place at the Spring Game on April 11.
