UWG Completes the Sweep of CBU on the Road

Memphis, TN - After coming away with two wins in Friday's doubleheader, The University of West Georgia baseball team completed the sweep of Christian Brothers today winning by a final score of 9-1.

The Wolves were strong on both sides of the ball as Jamie Sexton pitched eight strong innings, and the offense racked up nine runs off of thirteen hits. In eight innings, Sexton threw a total of 119 pitches, striking out eight batters and allowing just one run. His performance was good enough to pick up his third win of the season.

The Wolves jumped on the Bucs early in the series finale, scoring a combined 5 runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Galen Smith got things going picking up the Wolves first hit off a surprise bunt back to the pitcher. After another bunt single from Tyler Bowers, the Wolves had two runners on with just one out. Artemis Khadkodaian then came up with a big 2 RBI single to shortstop to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead that they would never look back from.

In the top of the third, Jake Shirley reached base on a lead-off triple down the left field line. Sumner McWhorter followed him up with another triple, this time down the right field line, to make the score 3-0. After a groundout from Smith, Bowers picked up his first RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to center. With two outs and no runners on, Casey James and Troy Brown came up with back-to-back doubles to make the game 5-0.

Heading into the ninth inning of the game, UWG had a 5-1 lead for Sexton. Just to be safe, the Wolves added four more runs of insurance to bring them to a 9-1 victory.

With one run already in the ninth inning, Trey Dickson stepped to the plate with bases loaded and doubled to left center scoring two more runs making the score 8-1. A couple batters later Shirley picked up his first RBI of the day off a sac fly to center to bring in the final run of the game. Shirley led the way in hits for the Wolves going 3-for-5 at the plate and hitting a triple.

With all three wins this weekend, West Georgia moves to 18-24 overall and 12-14 in the Gulf South Conference. UWG will be on the road again as they play this Wednesday against Georgia Southwestern. They will wrap up the season at home this weekend against GSC opponent, Union University.
