Wolves Sweep Saturday Doubleheader Against Bulldog

Carrollton, GA - Two completey different games made for a thrilling Saturday afternoon at Cole Field, as the Wolves would swept Union University. UWG won the first game in blowout fashion by a score of 9-0, and completed the Saturday sweep in a nerve-racking 5-4 game two.

In the two games combined, the West Georgia offense racked up a total of 19 hits and hit .392 as a team. A combination of six extra base hits and a 4-for-4 day on stolen bases put the Wolves in a poistion to score 14 total runs.

The Wolves have won the past 7-of-8 games heading into tomorrow's season finale against Union. Winning 2-of-3 from Delta State, sweeping Christian Brothers, and now sweeping Union in the first two games. This recent play has put the Wolves in a position to have their first winning record in conference since the 2014 season.

Game One - (Wolves 9, Bulldogs 0)
Jamie Sexton got the start in the first game of the day, and showed why he is still one of the most feared pitchers in the Gulf South Conference. Sexton pitched the complete game allowing just seven hits and also struck out seven. His performance was good enough to pick up his third win of the season.

The Woves started off the day hot, scoring one run in each of the first three innings against the Bulldogs. In the first inning, Sumner McWhorter picked up his first of three hits in the game, as he doubled to left center with two outs. Galen Smith followed him up with a single to right field that would score the first run of the game. That run batted in would be the first of three for Smith in the game.

After adding one run in the bottom of the second and third innings, the Wolves matched their total of three runs in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Shirley reached base on a single to left field with one out. A double from McWhorter put runners on second and third for UWG, and Smith then matched McWhorter, doubling to left field and scoring both runners to make the game 5-0. Bryan Dunson then brought in Smith on a single through the left side to bring in the final run of the inning and making it 6-0.

West Georgia scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of five hits. McWhorter picked up two RBI in the inning and Dunson added the final run of the game off a single to center that scored Shirley from second base.

Game Two - (Wolves 5, Bulldogs 4)
The second game was much closer than the first, as the Bulldogs offense came to life early in the game. Colton Duttweiler got the start in game two, pitching 3.1 inning and allowing four earned runs. At times, Duttweiler showed excellent command on the mound striking out four batters, but had a rough top of the fourth, allowing three earned runs.

Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning the Wolves found themselves down 4-1. However, the team would slowly chip away at Union's three run lead, and eventually take the lead in the bottom of the tenth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tyler Bowers led off the inning with a walk. Bowers came in to pinch hit for Smith, after Smith left the game sliding into home home to tie the game at 1-1. Bowers would come into score off a double from Casey James, which started the 4-0 run the Wolves would go on to win the game.

Thwe Wolves would trail the Bulldogs heading into the bottom of the final inning of the seven-inning game. In a crucial moment for the Wolves, Andrew Witte was able to leadoff the seventh with a walk. With a well-placed bunt to second base, Shaquille Jackson then also reached base safetly. With bases loaded and one out, Bowers was able to drive in the game-tying run making the game 4-4.

Fast-fowarding to the bottom of the tenth inning, Jackson came up with a clutch sacrifice fly to left field, that scored Troy Brown from third, and gave the Wolves a 5-4 victory.

With the Win, UWG moves to 20-24 on the season. The series finale, and the final game of the regular season, will be played tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Cole Field.
