Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia finished the series sweep of the Union University Bulldogs this afternoon in an eight-inning, 11-1 mercy rule victory at Cole Field. The game marked the final game of the regular season as the Wolves head into the Gulf South Conference Tournament. UWG won their last 8-of-9 games to finish up the season, and with their success at the end of the year in conference play, the 2014 Wolves set the new school record for most conference wins in a season, and also the first winning season in conference since the 2004 season.
Series Finale (Wolves 11, Bulldogs 1)
In the series finale, Cody Skinner took the mound for the Wolves on senior day at Cole Field. With a tremendous ceremony to before the game that had emotions flying high, Skinner finished his career at UWG the way he would of liked, pitching the complete game for the win and allowing just one run off of six hits.
The Bulldogs actually got the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly ball to right field that brought the runner from third into score and make the game 1-0.
However, that would be the only run Skinner would surrender, and the 1-0 Bulldog's lead would end shortly. In the bottom of the third, the Wolves would score three runs to take the lead, and they would never look back. The big hit of the inning would come from Troy Brown, as he doubled down the left field line scoring Tyler Bowers and Bryan Dunson. Shaquille Jackson brought in the final run of the inning on a single to second base to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings combined, the Wolves tacked on another five runs to their 3-1 lead off of a total of five hits. Sumner McWhorter, who hit above .600 in the first two games against Union, continued his hot hitting tripling to right center and scoring both run in the bottom of the fourth inning. A triple down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth from Andrew Witte would give the Wolves two more runs to make the game 7-1. Senior, Chase Reimer, then came in to pinch-hit, and helped add one more run to their lead off a RBI single to right field.
With a 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Wolves needed three runs to complete the ten run mercy rule, and that is exactly what the team accomplished in their final game of the season. Three runs off of four hits were good enough to finish off the Bulldogs and complete the series sweep to wrap up the 2014 regular season.
With the win, the Wolves move to an overall record of 21-24 on the season and 15-14 in the GSC. They will play this Friday at 11:00 ET against a team that will be determined later this evening.
