Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia baseball team wrapped up their series on the road against the University of North Alabama today. The Wolves won the first game of the series, but lost both games of the doubleheader today by scores of 6-2 in game one and 2-1 in game two.
Jamie Sexton took the hill in game one, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing four earned runs. However, his performance came up just short, as he surrendered his sixth loss in 2014.
Things were looking up for West Georgia, as they got off to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Galen Smith led off the inning with a walk, and eventually came around to score after
Artemis Kadkhodaian singled, and Smith scored after an error from the Lion's right fielder. Later in the inning, Kadkhodaian put up the second Wolves run, after
Troy Brown singled to score him.
UNA would answer back in the bottom half of the second, as they acquired their first run of the game off a single from Lundborg.
The Lions would go on to score five more runs to win the game by a final score of 6-2. Riley Sanderson picked up his fifth win of the year, as he dominated on the hill for much of the nine-inning game. Sanderson pitched all nine innings, giving up just six hits and also striking out six Wolves batters.
The second game of the doubleheader also had a good early feel to it, as the Wolves jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Jake Shirley got on first with West Georgia's first hit. After advancing to second on a wild pitch,
Sumner McWhorter singled driving him in for the Wolves first and only run of the game.
A.J. Sunstrom started in game two for the Wolves, pitching all six innings and allowing just two earned runs off of just six hits.
The Lions accumulated those two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, scoring one run in each.
With today's losses, the Wolves move to an overall record of 13-23 on the season and 7-13 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia will have a week free of games, but will get back into action next weekend against rival opponent, Valdosta State. The series will be played April 12-13 at Cole Field in Carrollton, GA.
