Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball team used a balanced offensive attack and great pitching to win game three of this weekend's series against West Alabama, earning a split of Saturday's doubleheader at Cole Field. After falling in the first game of the day, 6-4, the Wolves bounced back for a 5-2 in the final game of the three-game series.
Jamie Sexton gave up two early runs in game one, but was dominant for much of the afternoon until he found trouble in the 8th inning. The Wolves struggled offensively in game one, as they had just two hits up until the eighth inning when
Tyler Hutch singled and scored after
Payton Mann hit his first homerun of the season and his UWG career.
The Wolves got two more runs on the longball in the ninth inning, when
Troy Brown hit one over the left field fence. The Wolves got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to score, falling 6-4 in the first game of the doubleheader.
In game two,
A.J. Sunstrom got the start for head coach
Skip Fite, and Sunstrom was dominant for four innings. The Wolves' offense gave Sunstrom plenty of run support, beginning with two runs in the bottom half of the first frame.
Sumner McWhorter singled to center before
Payton Mann drove in his third run of the day with an RBI double, scoring McWhorter. First basemen
Dalton Rogers drove in the second UWG run, singling through the left side, scoring Mann.
The Wolves got a run in the second and a run in the third when
Troy Brown grounded into a fielder's choice, putting the Wolves up 4-0. The Wolves added their fifth and final run of the game in the fourth inning when
Taylor Bentley scored on an error following a bunt from
Tyler Hutch.
After Sunstrom got into trouble in the top of the fifth,
Chris Burdette came on for the Wolves, pitching two innings of hitless baseball, including two strikeouts and earned the win.
Tyler Gunnin came on to pitch for the Wolves in the seventh, giving up one hit, striking out one and earning his second save of the season.
Payton Mann and
Troy Brown each drove in three runs on the day to lead West Georgia at the plate.
Tyler Hutch,
Dalton Rogers, and
Drew Eady also had two hits on the day.
The Wolves move to 8-5 on the season following Saturday's split, and hold a 2-4 Gulf South Conference record. The Wolves are scheduled to travel to Georgia Regents in Augusta, Ga. on Wednesday afternoon before returning home for another GSC weekend series with Lee at Cole Field. First pitch in Augusta in Wednesday is set for 3:00 p.m.
