Late Rally Upends Lee in Series Opener

Carrollton, GA - The UWG Baseball squad won a close game against the Lee Flames on Friday in a very big Gulf South Conference series late in February. The final score from Cole Field was 4-3 as Colton Duttweiler picked up his first win of the season after coming on in relief of starting pitcher Matthew Norton.

The Wolves struck first in the game with two runs in the second inning to give Norton early run support. The first run came when Artemis Kadkhodaian hit a soft roller to third base and was able to beat out the throw, scoring Drew Eady. The next batter, Taylor Bentley, singled up the middle to score Troy Brown to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead going into the third frame.

After the Flames picked up a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to take the lead 3-2, UWG would mount a comeback in the seventh which would ultimately be the difference in the ballgame. To start the rally, Brown singled up the middle and Kadkhodaian walked to give the Wolves men on base to start the inning. Later in the inning, Kadkhodaian would score on a wild pitch to even the game up at 3-3, then Sumner McWhorter delivered a two-out RBI single to give UWG the lead.

Lee would go on to have a scoreless top of the eighth inning and closer Tyler Gunnin came on to pitch the ninth for West Georgia. Gunnin had another strong outing as the Wolves' closer, getting the Flames to go 1-2-3 to end the ballgame and secure the Wolves' third Gulf South Conference win of the season and their ninth win overall.

The Wolves starting pitcher, Norton, continued his solid performance this season, although he did not pick up the win. The junior went 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs. Duttweiler was a key player late in the game, holding the Flames scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, not giving up a hit in the 2.1 innings he pitched.

Leading the team at the plate today was McWhorter who had two hits and the key RBI to put the team ahead. Also having a good game was Bentley who had two hits and an RBI while also scoring a run. The second baseman Kadkhodaian had one hit and picked up his fourth RBI of the season and scored a run. The next two games of the series are tomorrow Saturday, February 28th, starting at 12pm at Cole Field.

The win moves UWG to 9-5 on the year, with a 3-4 spot in Gulf South Conference play.
