Carrollton, GA - UWG baseball fans had to wait until the third game of the season to get their first glimpse of
Jamie Sexton, and the Wolves' senior ace did not disappoint on Tuesday afternoon at Cole Field, powering West Georgia to a 4-3 victory over the Georgia Regents University of Augusta Jaguars.
Sexton, known for his longevity, went just five innings in the opener as head coach
Skip Fite and his staff are determined to make sure arms are fresh throughout the year. His line was dominant, as the senior allowed just one run on three hits in those five innings, striking out two. He allowed just two hits in his first four innings of work in the 2015 season.
West Georgia opened the game with Sexton sitting the Jaguars down in order in the top of the first. For the third straight game, the Wolves scored in the first inning, and much of it was fueled by a leadoff double from
Tyler Hutch. The junior outfielder has now produced a leadoff double in two of West Georgia's three games thus far on the year.
Sumner McWhorter followed with an RBI single and UWG was ahead 1-0 before the third batter stepped into the box.
Three batters later, with McWhorter on third, catcher
Payton Mann doubled to right-center, driving in McWhorter and giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, West Georgia struck again in the bottom of the third, as first baseman
Dalton Rogers drew a one-out walk to start the rally. Left fielder
Garrett Hayes then doubled to the gap in left-center, bringing Rogers around to score and giving UWG a 3-0 lead.
Drew Eady added a two-out RBI single to close out the West Georgia scoring on the afternoon.
In the top of the sixth,
Brandon Goldsmith came on in relief of Sexton and struggled out of the gate. He faced just three batters before Fite called on
Chris Burdette, who struck out the first batter he faced, then induced an inning-ending double-play to preserve the 4-1 lead. In the seventh, the Jaguars became the first team in the past five innings to reach first on Burdette, but he again pitched out of a jam.
The eighth was a different story, as Burdette's scoreless streak also came to an end as he gave up a two-run homer, which put the Jaguars in striking distance.
Colton Duttweiler came in after that and shut down the Jaguars in the 8th to keep the UWG lead at 4-3.
Tyler Gunnin then came in to work the ninth, allowing nothing, securing his first save at UWG and helping deliver the Wolves' victory.
Hayes and shortstop
Troy Brown each had two hits on the afternoon and no other player had any offensive statistic above one. The Wolves walked eight times on the day while the pitching staff allowed just two in the game.
West Georgia will remain at home for three more games, taking on Montevallo in a three-game set this weekend at Cole Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 3p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and Sunday.
