Carrollton, GA - The Wolves completed a three-game sweep of the Shorter Hawks on Monday in Rome. Late in the game, the offense was able to come through and give UWG a 4-3 victory after struggling for much of the day. The Wolves have now won 10 straight Gulf South Conference games.
How it Happened - The Wolves struggled for the first seven innings of the game only recording one hit in the top of the second inning on a single by
Payton Mann. The team waited until the eighth inning to tie the ballgame with two runs on two hits and one key error by the Hawks. The first run of the game for UWG was scored by
Troy Brown when
Tyler Hutch grounded out to third base. The next run scored on an error by the Hawks second baseman on a ball hit by
Artemis Kadkhodaian scoring
Neal Gandee. In the top of the ninth inning, the Wolves would steal the game from the Hawks scoring two more runs to take a 4-2 lead. Gandee had an RBI single that scored the go ahead run in the ninth and Hutch had a sac fly to give the Wolves their fourth run.
What it Means - The sweep of the Shorter Hawks (8-10, 5-7 in GSC) gives the Wolves, (17-6, 11-4 in GSC) their 10th Straight Conference victory of the season. UWG is now in a tie for first place in the Conference with Alabama Huntsville. The Wolves will continue GSC play on March 21st against West Florida at Cole Field.
On the Mound- Starting pitcher
Brandon Goldsmith, who had a complete game shutout his last start, struggled in the first inning giving up two runs on four hits. Goldsmith would settle down after the first inning and pitch like he did his last start, only giving up three hits in the next five innings. For the game, Goldsmith had eight strikeouts in six innings of work only allowed the two runs in the first inning. In the seventh inning,
A.J. Sunstrom would replace Goldsmith and he only faced three batters, but he recorded his 17th strikeout of the season for his only out of the inning. The left hander
Colton Duttweiler replaced Sunstrom in the seventh with one out and got out of a jam and held the Hawks to no runs or hits in 1.1 innings of work to help keep the Wolves in the game.
Chris Burdette would take over in the eighth inning for his second appearence in two days and would finish the game for UWG going 1.1 innings only giving up one hit.
At the Plate- The team struggled for most of the day at the dish and only had five hits for the game, but they found a way to score late in the game. Leading the team in hits was
Troy Brown who had two on the day and no one else had more than one for the Wolves. For the second straight game,
Tyler Hutch led the team in RBI from the leadoff spot with 2 RBI for the game.
Neal Gandee came in as the DH and he had a clutch hit late in the game to record his first RBI of the season.
