UWG Wins in Thrilling comeback Victory

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves continued their Conference winning streak on Friday night with a 5-4 victory against the West Florida Argos at Cole Field. After trailing early in the game, the Wolves would mount a late comeback and take the game into extra innings where they would eventually beat the Argos in the bottom of the 10th inning.

With the victory, West Georgia has now won 11 straight Gulf South Conference games and moves to 18-7 on the year and 12-4 in GSC action. West Florida falls to 15-10 and 9-7 in conference play.

The game started out slow for the UWG offense and they struggled early in the game to string together hits and score runs. The Argos took an early lead in the top of the second inning scoring three runs on three hits. They would add another run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead and take control of the game. The Wolves answered in the bottom of the fourth with their first run of the game on a RBI singe to left center by Artemis Kadkhodaian. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wolves would pick up another run on a homerun by Dalton Rogers to cut the lead to 4-2. It would take UWG until the bottom of the ninth inning to score again as they treated the crowd at Cole Field to a thrilling finish. Artemis Kadkhodaian recorded his second RBI of the game when he singled to left field scoring Garrett Hayes to make the score 4-3 West Florida. The next batter, Troy Brown, would tie the ballgame on a sac fly that scored Payton Mann. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Wolves would win the game on a ball hit by Garrett Hayes that went over the left fielder that scored Tyler Hutch with two outs in the inning.

Jamie Sexton made his eighth start of the season for
UWG and he struggled with his command early, but kept the Wolves within striking distance for later in the game. He went eight innings on the day and allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. In the top of the ninth inning, A.J. Sunstrom came on to replace Sexton and he did not give up a hit after facing three batters. After the Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, Chris Burdette replaced Sunstrom in the top of the 10th inning and he also did not allow a hit for the game.

Dalton Rogers led the offense with one of his best games of the season. He had three hits and was a triple short of the hitting for the cycle while also scoring two runs. Another player that stood out for his contribution at the plate was Artemis Kadkhodaian, who had two RBI, and had one of the key hits in the ninth inning to lead the comeback for the team. Tyler Hutch had two hits and scored his 30th run of the season in tonight's game and no one else had more than one hit for the Wolves.

The series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm at Cole Field. To follow all the action live, be sure to follow the team on Twitter @UWGAthletics.
