Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves will travel to Clinton this weekend to face the Mississippi College Choctaws in a three game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7th at 3pm. The UWG Baseball team is going for their fifth win out of their last six games and their sixth Conference win of the season. The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 2pm.
The Wolves and the Choctaws will meet in a Gulf South Conference game for the first time in 19 years. UWG is coming off a sweep of the Lee Flames and currently has a four game win streak. Coming into the game Saturday, the Wolves are tied for fifth in the Conference with a GSC record of 5-4. This will be the second road trip for the team and early in the season they have faired well on the road with a record of 2-2.
Coming into the game against the Choctaws, senior leader
Sumner McWhorter is heating up at the plate as he had a great series versus the Lee Flames which led the Wolves to three wins last weekend. In the three games, McWhorter had eight hits and drove in four key runs and the Flame pitchers struggled all weekend getting him out. Out of the eight hits McWhorter had, five came against right handed pitching and the team is 9-4 against right handed starters. In 59 plate appearances, McWhorter has only struck out five times and he is second on the team in runs scored with 15 and tied for first in hits with 20.
One key for the Wolves hot start is the great defense the team is playing. So far, the team has committed 17 errors on the season compared to 30 by their opponents. Also, UWG has turned 12 double plays while only hitting into 9. Leading the team on defense is
Dalton Rogers with only three errors in 171 attempts. The middle of the Defense,
Artemis Kadkhodaian and
Troy Brown have combined for 8 double plays. One of the most impressive stats this season is that the UWG outfield has yet to make an error.
Tyler Hutch has made some spectacular catches in right field and his speed has been an asset for the Wolves as he has tracked down everything hit his way.
