Carrollton, GA - The UWG Baseball team won both games of the doubleheader against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Saturday in Clinton, MS. West Georgia won the opener 6-4 in 10 innings and then closed out the day with a 5-4 victory in the late session. Both of the games were very close down the strech but the UWG bullpen came through in a big way, allowing just one run in 8.2 innings of work on the afternoon.
The Wolves are now 13-5 on the season and have won six straight conference games to push their GSC record to 7-4. The last loss came two weeks ago in the first game of the doubleheader day against West Alabama, but since a 5-2 win in that second game of that day against UWA, the Wolves have not lost.
Jamie Sexton started the first game of the day and had a no decision, as he pitched into the fifth inning, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. The Wolves fell behind early when the Choctaws scored a run in the first inning. UWG would respond in the top of the third with a run of their own when
Troy Brown grounded out to second to score
Drew Eady.
The Wolves would have a big fifth inning, scoring three runs capped off by RBI singles from
Tyler Hutch and
Garrett Hayes to bring the score to 4-1 UWG. Sexton would settle down after giving up the run in the first and the Choctaws would not score again until the sixth inning when they had a two-run homer to bring the game to 4-3.
After the Choctaws scored a run in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4, the game would go to extra innings when Hayes had the biggest hit of the day in the 10th inning with a two-run double which would be the difference in the game. Going into the bottom of the 10th, head coach
Skip Fite turned to closer
Tyler Gunnin, who shut down the Choctaws and secured his fourth save of the season.
Chris Burdette picked up his first win of the season in the extra inning game. Leading the offense was Hayes with two hits and three RBI and
Drew Eady also had a good game scoring scoring two runs for the game. Hutch and Brown also had one RBI each and combined for three hits and two runs scored at the top of the lineup.
Matthew Norton started game two for UWG and he struggled from the start, giving up four earned runs in three innings of work. Unlike the first game, the Wolves would strike first in this one with a run in the second inning.
Artemis Kadkhodaian led off the inning with a single, then moved to second on a balk and to third on a bunt single from
Drew Eady.
Keith Buckhault then drove in the first run, hitting into a double play but scoring Kadkhodaian on the play.
The Choctaws would then score four unanswered runs with two in the third and two in the fourth.
A.J. Sunstrom came on in relief for Norton in the fourth and he pitched well, going 1.1 innings and giving up no runs. The Wolves had a big fifth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at 4-4 while Hayes, Mann, and Kadkhodaian would have RBI singles in the inning.
The biggest hit of the game came in the seventh inning when Kadkhodaian would drive in what would be the winning run on a single up the middle, scoring Hayes.
Ethan Hunter would finish the game and lock up the win for the Wolves. Hunter got his first win of the season on what was his longest outing of the year. He pitched great going 1.2 innings and allowing no runs and zero hits. Kadkhodaian was the hero at the plate driving in two runs on three hits and also with one RBI was Hayes and catcher
Payton Mann.
