Carrollton, GA - After several days of heavy rain in the Carrollton area, the West Georgia Wolves were finally able to play baseball on Saturday afternoon as they swept the days doubleheader against Christian Brothers at Cole Field. Before the game, UWG honored the team's six seniors with a ceremony and the team responded by winning the last conference home series of the season.
Jamie Sexton made the final start of his career in front of the home fans at Cole Field and he treated them to a great ballgame. The Wolves ace went 7.2 innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out a season high 11 batters. West Georgia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Payton Mann hit a sacrifice fly scoring
Tyler Hutch and
Sumner McWhorter had an RBI single. In the second inning, the Wolves added two more runs on an RBI groundout by Hutch and then
Artemis Kadkhodaian launched his second homerun of the season over the right field fence.
In the top of the fourth inning, Christian Brothers scored their first run of the game to make the score 4-1, but the Wolves responded by scoring two more runs in the fifth inning on RBI hits by
Garrett Hayes and
Artemis Kadkhodaian pushing the lead to 6-1. In the sixth inning, both teams picked up a pair of runs highlighted by an RBI hit by Kadkhodaian which gave him his third RBI for the game. The Bucs scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 8-5 in favor of the Wolves. After Sexton faced his 32nd batter of the game,
Chris Burdette came in to pitch for UWG and he allowed two hits but no runs. In the ninth inning,
Tyler Gunnin replaced Burdette and picked up his tenth save of the season and he becomes the first UWG closer with double digit saves.
At the plate,
Artemis Kadkhodaian had one of his best games in the batters box this season. He went 3-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored while also hitting a long ball. For the game,
Troy Brown was the only other player to have multiple hits and
Tyler Hutch,
Garrett Hayes,
Payton Mann, and
Sumner McWhorter each had one RBI.
After the Wolves (27-13, 19-10) won game one of the doubleheader, Head Coach
Skip Fite gave
Matthew Norton the start for game number two. Norton had an uncharacteristic outing and he struggle the entire time he was on the mound. In three innings of work, Norton surrendered four earned runs on five hits and also walked a batter. Although Norton gave up three runs in the first inning, UWG scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, with the help of
Artemis Kadkhodaian and
Payton Mann who both recorded RBI singles. After the Bucs took 4-3 lead in the top of the third inning, the Wolves scored four runs in the bottom of the inning after Mann had a two RBI triple and
Dalton Rogers had an RBI single to give UWG a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wolves blew the game open scoring three more runs when
Taylor Bentley blasted his first homerun of the season. Also in the inning,
Artemis Kadkhodaian singled through the left side giving him his second RBI of the game. After scoring one run in the fifth inning to make the score 11-4, the Wolves added four more runs in the sixth inning to finish up the scoring for the ballgame.
Keith Buckhault hit his first homerun of the season in the sixth inning and
Troy Brown had a double to right center scoring a pair of runs for the Wolves.
The offensive explosion in game two led to 17 hits for UWG, and
Tyler Hutch went 4-4 on the day scoring three runs and driving in one run.
Artemis Kadkhodaian followed up his impressive game one with another great game picking up two more hits and RBI. Also having a great day at the plate was catcher
Payton Mann who had two hits and three RBI.
Dalton Rogers and
Garrett Hayes each went 2-4 with one RBI each and
Keith Buckhault went 2-2 with a homerun after coming in the game for
Walker Borneman. Also driving in a run for the Wolves was
Sumner McWhorter and
Taylor Bentley.
The Wolves will return to action on Wednesday, April 22nd against Georgia Southwestern at Cole Field with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00pm.
