Carrollton, GA - In the last home game of the season, the Wolves put on an offensive clinic and gave the home fans a game to remember as they defeated Georgia Southwestern 17-4 at Cole Field. With the eyes of the NCAA regional committee on them, the team hammered out 16 hits for the game and received solid pitching from the bullpen to hold the Hurricanes to four runs in the contest.
The Wolves started the game just as it was announced that UWG is ranked seventh in the NCAA South Region heading into this weekend's regular season finale. West Georgia will be looking to impress the voting members over the final stretch, as the Wolves look to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1998 season.
The starting pitcher for UWG was left hander
Colton Duttweiler, who made his second start of the season for the Wolves. He managed to pitch three innings giving up one earned run on one hit. During the game, Duttweiler struggled with his command and although he only allowed the one hit, he could not pitch deep into the ballgame.
Josh Morgan replaced Duttweiler on the mound, but he had to leave the game after one inning because of an injury. After the injury,
Brandon Goldsmith entered the game and he went 2.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits. The next pitcher to come in for UWG happened to be
Ethan Hunter who recored his second win of the season and was the pitcher of record. Senior
Chris Burdette closed out the game pitching the top of the ninth inning for the Wolves.
At the plate, nine players for West Georgia had at least one RBI in the game and five players had multiple hits. Leading the team in hitting was
Matthew Pope who made his first Career start for the Wolves. Pope went 3-4, driving in three runs while also scoring a run himself hitting from the ninth spot in the lineup. Both
Payton Mann and
Drew Eady had two RBI for the day and Eady scored three runs.
Dalton Rogers and
Garrett Hayes continued their great season's and they each had two hits and one RBI each.
Keith Buckhault followed up his strong performance last weekend with another good game going 1-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Hutch and
Taylor Bentley also had one RBI on the day and
Troy Brown had two hits and scored a team high four runs.
The Wolves return to action this weekend when they travel to Jackson, TN to take on Union in what will be the last Conference series of the of the season for the team.
