Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Baseball team won both games of the Friday doubleheader against Conference opponent North Alabama at Cole Field. The two wins keep the Wolves in third place in the GSC standings and the team will go for the series sweep on Saturday at 1:00pm.
Jamie Sexton took the hill for game one of the series, making his 10th start of the season for UWG. He struggled early in the game, giving up four runs in the first two innings which were all unearned. But much like he has done all season, Sexton found a way to go deep in the ballgame, pitching seven innings and only giving up one earned run. After falling behind 4-0 early, the Wolves would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when
Dalton Rogers singled up the middle to score
Tyler Hutch making the score 4-1 North Alabama. The Wolves would pick up another run in the bottom of the sixth after
Payton Mann singled up the middle scoring
Garrett Hayes to cut the lead to 4-2.
The key inning of the game was the seventh as the UWG bats came alive. Highlighted by a two RBI double by
Dalton Rogers, and a two RBI triple by
Sumner McWhorter, the Wolves would score five runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead going to the top of the eighth. Both teams would score one run in the eighth inning and closer
Tyler Gunnin would come into the ballgame and record his eighth save of the season, and
Jamie Sexton would pick up the win giving him six on the year.
In the game, West Georgia (23-10, 16-7) had 15 hits and were led by
Dalton Rogers and
Payton Mann at the plate. Rogers had three hits and drove in 4 runs while Mann had four hits and two RBI. Also having a good game at the plate were
Tyler Hutch and
Garrett Hayes who combined for five hits and Hutch scored a team high three runs from the top of the lineup.
After coming from behind in the first game of the day, the second game was a different story as the Wolves continued swinging hot bats and jumped out to an early lead. In the bottom of the first inning, UWG scored five runs after RBI from
Walker Borneman,
Payton Mann,
Drew Eady, and
Troy Brown to set the tone for the game. The Wolves would get another run in the second inning when
Dalton Rogers hit his second homerun of the season, and they would get two more runs in the third on a two RBI single by
Sumner McWhorter.
After the Lions scored a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 8-1, West Georgia would respond with five more runs as
Artemis Kadkhodaian had a two RBI single to left field and
Troy Brown doubled to right center to drive in two more runs. In the fifth inning, the Wolves would add two more runs to cap off the score for the game and make the final score 15-1.
Matthew Norton started the second game of the day and he pitched very well, going the full seven innings and only giving up one earned run on six hits. After having 15 hits in game one, the team would put up 18 hits in the second game in what was one of the biggest offensive games of the season. Eight different players had at least one RBI for the game and
Walker Borneman and
Troy Brown led the team with three RBI each.
Payton Mann continued his great day at the dish picking up three more hits and one RBI.
Dalton Rogers also had a very productive game at the plate with two hits of his own and he scored three runs for the Wolves.
Tyler Hutch and
Troy Brown both had three hits each and
Artemis Kadkhodaian had two hits and two RBI.
