Wolves set for Gulf South Conference Tourney

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves are off and running to the 2015 Gulf South Conference Tournament, held this year in Livingston, Ala. The host is top-seeded West Alabama and all games will be played on Tartt Field. The Wolves received the third seed in this year's six-team field, facing off with fourth-seed West Florida at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.

West Georgia will be looking to win it's first Gulf South Conference tournament championship since the 2007-08 athletic year, when the volleyball squad took home the GSC crown. The Wolves are the seventh-ranked team in the NCAA South Region currently, with the top six teams earning bids to the regional. Automatic bids go to the champions of the Sunshine State, Gulf South and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conferences.

Wolves Close 2015 Regular Season Strong
The West Georgia Wolves closed the 2015 season on a roll, winning eight of their last 10 games, including six straight to finish out the regular season with 22 Gulf South Conference victories and earn the third seed in this year's GSC tournament. The Wolves finished the season with a 31-13 record, the best season in more than a decade, as the last time West Georgia had as many as 31 victories in a season was in the 2004 year, but in that season, the Wolves finished fifth in the GSC East and missed the GSC tournament in Millington.

In the Streak - Hitting
In the midst of a six-game winning streak, the West Georgia Wolves have been dominant in nearly all facets of the game, outscoring their opponents 62-15 in that span, averaging more than 10 runs per game. In that six-game stretch, the Wolves are hitting .353 and only one of the nine regular starters in the lineup is hitting less than .300. Troy Brown leads the UWG contingent in the past six games, hitting .474. Dalton Rogers is just under .400 at .391 in the final six games of the year and leads the team with nine RBI.

Comparisons to 2013
The 2013 Gulf South Conference tournament was a crazy one, as the tournament was forced to move due to the rain that battered Chattanooga, the original host city that year. It moved to Cole Field in Carrollton, and the Wolves rode a solid pitching staff to Championship Day. West Georgia lost in the semifinal game, but the comparisons to this season are similar. Solid starting pitching, lights out in the 9th and timely hitting were the hallmarks of both teams.

Garrett Hayes - First Team All-GSC
Despite the success the Wolves had in the 2015 season, only one of the five Wolves named All-Gulf South Conference was named First Team. Garrett Hayes, West Georgia's everyday left fielder, held down that position with strength this year, becoming a First Team All-GSC honoree earlier this week. Hayes was an obvious choice for that, leading the Wolves witha .368 batting average. He also had game winning hits in three games this year, including a walk-off single against West Florida in the 11th inning in Carrollton and a 9th inning single at Valdosta State.
