Wolves score early, take down #2 Chargers

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia offense was rolling on Sunday evening at Tartt Field in Liviingston, Ala., as the third-seeded Wolves used a four-run outburst in the bottom of the first to take down the second-seed Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Day 2 of the 2015 Gulf South Conference Tournament.

The win evened the season series for West Georgia over the Chargers, as UAH took 2-of-3 from the Wolves in the first Gulf South Conference series of the year back in mid-February. UWG pounded out seven runs on eight hits in the game and have now scored 14 runs in two games at this year's GSC tournament.

What it Means: West Georgia now moves on to the third day of the tournament as one of two undefeated teams in this GSC postseason thus far. The Wolves will take on top-seed and host West Alabama at 1:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon (EST). Likely on the mound for West Georgia will be junior Brandon Goldsmith, who comes into the weekend with a 4-1 record on the year and did not pitch against UWA in Carrollton earlier this season.

How it Happened: The Wolves opened the game on fire, as starter Matthew Norton sat the Chargers down in order in the top of the first, then right-fielder Tyler Hutch doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning. But he stayed at second for the next three batters, as the only person to reach base in that span was first baseman Dalton Rogers, who was hit by a pitch.

Sumner McWhorter started the scoring with a single, scoring Hutch from second, then moved to second on the throw home, giving the Wolves runners at second and third with two outs. Rogers then scored on a balk, followed by a single from senior shortstop Troy Brown to score McWhorter and give UWG a 3-0 lead. Brown then stole second and scored on an infield single from Taylor Bentley for the fourth run of the inning.

The game stayed scoreless through the second, then the Wolves struck again in the bottom of the third, as McWhorter, the senior third baseman for West Georgia, homered with Rogers on base, giving UWG a 6-0 lead.

In the second time through the order, the Chargers touched up Norton for a pair of runs on two doubles, but the junior worked his way out of the jam to keep the four-run lead. The Wolves added a run in the bottom of the fifth, with McWhorter starting the rally with a single through the right side. He moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Keith Buckhault, then advanced to third on a passed ball. In the next at-bat, Bentley struck out, but reached first on a passed ball and McWhorter scored to give the Wolves a 7-2 advantage.

In the top of the 8th, Norton ran into trouble with the top of the UAH lineup, allowing a single and a triple to open the inning and the 2-3-4 hitters coming up. UWG head coach Skip Fite went to the bullpen and senior A.J. Sunstrom and the scrappy pitcher came through. Sunstrom sat the next three batters down in order, stranding the runner at third and giving the Wolves a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 8th.

That would be all the scoring, as Tyler Gunnin came on in the top of the 9th, mowing down the UAH batters in order to secure the victory for the Wolves. McWhorter led the offensive with a 3-for-4 outing on the day, scoring three runs and driving in three as well. Hutch rebounded nicely after an 0-for-4 day on Saturday to go 2-for-4 with a run scored. Brown was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Norton was the hero on the mound, working seven innings and allowing three runs on just five hits on the day. Sunstrom and Gunnin each worked a perfect inning in relief on the day. Norton moves to 8-2 on the year and helps the Wolves move to 33-13, giving UWG the most wins since a 34-win season in 2003.
