CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves have now scored at least seven runs in five-straight games, and with Wednesday's 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Emmanuel, the Wolves have now won four straight.
West Georgia fell into a 6-1 hole on the road in Franklin Springs, Ga. on Wednesday evening, but a three-run pinch-hit home run from Nick Poskey in the eighth and a fantastic final six innings from the bullpen powered the Wolves to the comeback victory. The win moves West Georgia to 11-15 on the year.
This one saw the West Georgia Wolves take a few innings to get moving, but Emmanuel was the opposite, as the Lions built a 6-0 lead in the first three innings. Starter Brody Syer gave up a home run in the bottom of the first, then another in the second before things went south in the third. In that inning, Emmanuel played four runs on a pair of two-RBI doubles, forcing head coach Skip Fite to go to the pen and Ryan Parker.
Parker worked 1.2 innings with two strikeouts, holding the Lions at bay during that span. West Georgia got into the swing of things in the fourth when junior left fielder Jermond Williams opened a one-out rally with a single. Williams stole second, then came home after a Haywood single forced a throw home that was mishandled by the catcher to make it 6-1. West Georgia then cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs.
Brian Dansereau led off the inning with his first triple of the season followed by an RBI double from Cade Marlowe to make it 6-2. Marlowe quickly stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly from redshirt freshman Joe Skinner to cut the EC lead to 6-3. Both teams added another run in the seventh to make it 7-4 heading into the final two innings of the day.
In the eighth, the Wolves started another rally with Lane Griffith drawing his third walk of the day, followed by a pinch-hit single from Joseph Hill. Fite then went to his bench again, bringing in senior Nick Poskey to pinch hit for Barnes. The move paid dividends, as Poskey blasted his second home run of the season to tie the game at 7-7. C.J. Fehribach took control from there, working 1.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out two and keeping the Lions caged.
In the ninth, Joe Skinner led off the inning with a double, then came home when Drew Haywood reached on an error to give the Wolves an 8-7 lead. The first batter reached on an error, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Fite brought in Drew Hayles at that point, and the senior immediately picked off the EC runner at second for the second out of the inning. A line out to short ended it, as the Wolves completed the comeback victory.
The Wolves will be back in action this weekend at Montevallo, taking on the Falcons in Gulf South Conference play beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. in Montevallo, Ala.
