Wolves Fall in GSC Doubleheader

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Montevallo Falcons snapped West Georgia's four-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson Field in Montevallo, Ala., handing the Wolves a 5-4 loss in 10 innings in Game 1 of a three-game series. In the nightcap, the Falcons again walked off, winning 6-5 to sweep the day.

UWG starting pitcher Taylor Boisclair had one of his best outings of the year in this one, working seven innings with no earned runs allowed, three hits and eight strikeouts. The lone run that crossed from Montevallo came in the bottom of the first after an error, making it an unearned run.

The Wolves opened the game with a one-out single from senior second baseman Brian Dansereau followed by a triple from senior center fielder Cade Marlowe, giving the Wolves an early 1-0 advantage. After Montevallo answered with a run in the bottom of the first, the two pitchers settled into a groove, allowing no runs to cross until the top of the seventh. in that inning, junior catcher Lane Griffith reached, then scored on a double from Dansereau for a 2-1 lead.

Senior Greyson McLeod came on in relief of Boisclair in the eighth, allowing nothing with help from his defense, as a line out double play ended the eighth to send the game to the ninth with the Wolves leading 2-1. In the ninth, a Joseph Hill single scored Logan Taylor to give the Wolves a 3-1 cushion heading into the potential final at-bat. But Montevallo responded with a double from Jason Cryar and a homer from Tyler Crabbe, both off of Drew Hayles, tying the game and sending it to extras.

In the 10th, Marlowe singled, then stole second and third, then came home on a single from Dan Oberst to score Marlowe and give the Wolves a 4-3 advantage. Hayles worked his way through two outs in the bottom of the 10th and head coach Skip Fite went back to his bullpen, bringing on junior Ryan Parker to get the final out. Crabbe doubled, scoring both runners to give the Falcons the 5-4 win.

In game two, the Wolves came out swinging again in the first as Nick Poskey led off the game with a double. Two batters later, Marlowe came up big again with a single, bringing home Poskey and giving West Georgia the early 1-0 lead. Starter Cason Greathouse was dealing early, picking up strikeouts on the first six outs of the game. He allowed two hits in the second, but all of his outs in the first two innings were accomplished by strikeout.

Greathouse picked up two quick outs in the third as the Wolves held on to that 1-0 lead, but then the Falcons picked up the pace offensively. The next seven batters reached safely, including two home runs to give the Falcons a commanding 5-1 lead and forcing Fite to go to the bullpen with junior Sawyer Steele, who closed out the inning with no more damage, turning things back over to the UWG offense.

Junior outfielder Jermond Williams started the rally in the top of the fourth, as the Wolves answered in the inning with three runs. Williams homered with one out in the inning, followed by back-to-back infield singles from Tucker Breen and Lane Griffith. Poskey was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Marlowe brought home two more runs with a double to pull the Wolves to within one at 5-4.

In the fifth inning, Williams was part of another rally, as he came up with one out after an Oberst single and a sacrifice bunt. The Falcons walked Williams to put runners on the corners with Breen at the plate. The senior laced a single up the middle, tying the game. Steele continued his solid outing, working four innings and striking out eight batters until the bottom of the seventh. In that inning, the Falcons loaded the bases, then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch to end the game.

West Georgia falls to 11-6 on the year and 7-8 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Falcons move to 14-13 with an 11-5 record against GSC opponents this season.

Notable: Lane Griffith gunned two runners at second on through the first 14 innings of the day, giving him nine for the season in 23 attempts ...
