Wolves Fall in Midweek Battle with CSU

CARROLLTON, Ga. - A pair of big innings for the Columbus State Cougars proved to be too much for the West Georgia Wolves on Wednesday afternoon at Cole Field, as the Wolves dropped a midweek battle with Columbus State by an 11-6 count.

The matchup was the second in as many days for the Wolves, and the Cougars used a five-run second inning and a four-run inning in the fourth to power past West Georgia for the second time this season.

The Wolves were scoreless for the first three innings of the contest as CSU built a 9-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. In that frame, designated hitter Dan Oberst put the first run on the board with a home run to center field. The shot was the third of the year for the junior and broke up the scoreless inning streak for West Georgia. Brian Dansereau followed that with a single, then came home on a double from Brady Barnes to make it 9-2.

That started a string of three consecutive innings with at least a run scored for the Wolves, as Joseph Hill doubled home Nick Poskey in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-3. Oberst made it two homers in the game in the bottom of the sixth for the fourth run of the contest for West Georgia. The final runs of the game came off the bat of Dansereau, who homered in the eighth to make it 9-6.

Cason Greathouse and C.J. Fehribach worked a combined four scoreless innings through the middle of the game. Greathouse worked three innings, allowing two hits and striking out one while Fehribach worked a perfect eighth, also striking out one. Dansereau and Oberst combined for five of the Wolves' nine hits in the game, with each driving in two runs and scoring two runs.

The Wolves will be back in action this weekend in a three-game series with the Union Bulldogs. The series schedule has changed with anticipated rain late Thursday and into Friday. UWG and Union will now play a single game at 5 p.m. on Friday followed by a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The series will be the final home games of the year for the Wolves, with Senior Day set for Saturday between games.
