Men's Basketball Preview: The Clayton State Game

CARROLLTON, Ga. - After spending the first two weekends of the 2021-22 season on the road, the West Georgia Wolves will play for the first time in the friendly confines of The Coliseum on Tuesday evening as a part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The evening will start at 5:30 p.m. with the UWG women's team against North Georgia followed by a meeting between Clayton State and the men's team in the late game.

•    UWG head coach Dave Moore is in his fourth season at the helm of the program in the 2021-22 athletic year. He has 42 victories in his first three years at UWG and has coached three All-Conference players, a Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and he guided Michael Zabetakis to win the GSC Commissioner's Trophy this past summer. Moore has a 42-40 record at West Georgia, his first stop as a head coach.

•    Sophomore forward Keshawn Heard hasn't hit much from the field in the first three games, but the Ohio native made the most of his first made basket on Saturday against Montevallo. That shot came as time expired as Heard used a fantastic move in the post to hit a baby hook and give the Wolves a 73-71 victory over the Falcons in a non-conference tilt.

•    Senior guard Seth Brown-Carter has the top performance of the young season, hitting for 30 points in the first win of the year against Palm Beach Atlantic. The win was a return party for Brown-Carter, as he also had a double-double in the game, pulling down 10 rebounds in just his third competitive game since the 2019-20 season.

•    Graduate student Kadeim Jones has been solid through the first three games of the season, scoring in double-figures in each contest thus far. He had 20 points in the opener against Embry-Riddle, the put up 20 points against Palm Beach Atlantic in the second game. Against Montevallo, he scored 16 points in the second half, leading the Wolves with 22 points in the contest.

•     Five different Wolves are averaging double-figure scoring this season, led by Brown-Carter with 17.7 points per game. Jones is right behind that at 17.3 followed by Michael Zabetakis, who is averaging 14 points per game. Jalen Sasser is next with 12.3 points per game and J.J. Barnes is right at the line with 10.0 points per contest.

•    As a team, the Wolves are hitting 79 percent from the free-throw line this season. That number leads the Gulf South Conference, as the Wolves are 34-of-43 from the charity stripe through the first three games. Kadeim Jones has hit 13-of-14 free-throws this season, giving him a 92.9 shooting percentage from the line, which leads the conference.

•    Jalen Sasser has been the Wolves' sixth-man this season and has been playing that spot well. The senior is averaging 12.3 points per game and he tied a career-high with 22 points against Embry-Riddle in the opener.

•    J.J. Barnes has worked his way into the starting lineup and is making the most of his time in the spotlight, averaging 10.0 points per game on the year. His best game thus far was against Palm Beach Atlantic, when he had 14 points and eight assists.
