Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG women's basketball team earned their first Gulf South Conference win on Monday night, defeating the Alabama Huntsville Chargers by a 70-43 final on the road at Spragins Hall.
West Georgia (3-4, 1-2 GSC) started slow, but after outscoring UAH 23-9 in the second quarter the Wolves never looked back, snapping a two-game losing streak in the process.
The key stat on Monday night was West Georgia's performance on the glass, outrebounding Alabama Huntsville (1-7, 0-3 GSC) by a 47-30 margin, and turning that advantage into 17 second chance points. UWG also tied a season-high in three-pointers made, pouring in 11 triples and hitting at a 37.9 percent clip.
Things looked bleak for the Wolves early on, as UWG only scored seven points in the first quarter, but the defense kept them in the game as UAH only led 12-7 after 10 minutes of play.
UWG would make their move in the second quarter, fueled by seven points in the quarter from
Siera Carter. The Wolves would take their first lead of the game on Carter's three-pointer just over halfway through the period. The Wolves would finish the second on an 11-0 run, turning the early deficit into a nine-point, 30-21, lead at the halftime break.
It was more of the same in the second half as West Georgia would add to the lead, outscoring the Chargers 22-3, eventually building as much as a 30-point lead.
Every player that touched the floor scored for West Georgia on Monday night, including freshman
Ranajah Verdell, who scored a career-high 13 points and pullexd down four rebounds.
Tahya Campbell also found double-figures with 11 points.
Senior guard
Zaria Bankston had a solid night running the point for
Scott Groninger's offense, scoring five points and dishing out seven assists.
On the glass,
Jaylin Austin led the Wolves with eight rebounds while
Aniedi Nsentip pulled down seven.
As a team, the Wolves shot 44.4 percent from the field as they snapped a 12-game losing streak against GSC foes.
West Georgia will return home on Saturday to take on Albany State in non-conference action at The Coliseum. Tip-off for that game is set for 2 p.m.
