CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia women's track and field team has one final tune-up this weekend in preparation for the Gulf South Conference Championships at the end of the month.
The Wolves are making the short trip to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Track on Friday and Saturday, where they'll compete among 16 teams, including league foes Alabama-Huntsville, Lee, Mississippi College and Valdosta State.
West Georgia is coming off a strong performance at another Division I meet, holding its own at the Gamecock Invitational on the campus of South Carolina University last weekend.
Senior standout
Nadia Davila recorded the No. 6 time in the nation in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.09 seconds in Columbia, and UWG head coach
Ryan Bailey said it wouldn't surprise him to see that time drop even further this weekend.
"There's really no ceiling on Nadia. She continues to get better every week. With Division I meets this week and last week, she continues to step up to the level of competition," Bailey said.
Fellow senior
Brandi Boddy broke her own school record in the shot put last weekend at 12.99 meters, while teammate
Melita-Marie Roachford followed in 16
th at 11.33 meters and also placed 13
th in the hammer (41.06m).
Bailey expects another elite effort from Boddy as she puts in the final touches prior to the conference meet.
"If she continues to improve her technique as she has been, I expect her to throw well over 13 meters this year and I have every belief that we'll see another school record this weekend," Bailey said.
Junior
Elizabeth Johnson is also riding a wave of momentum in the throws coming off a personal-best throw of 33.23 meters in the javelin last week.
On the track, sprinter
Kira Montefusco has been on a tear over the course of her freshman season, including turning in a 12.18 – the fifth-fastest time in UWG history – in the 100-meter dash last weekend.
"She is in rarified air. I could see her going below 12 seconds at some point this season if she continues to progress like we think she can," Bailey said.
Following this weekend's competition at Georgia Tech, the Wolves will set their sights on the GSC Championships on April 29-May 1 at Montevallo.
