Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG volleyball ended day one of the Concord Classic unscathed as the Wolves completed their second sweep of day after a 3-0 win over California University of Pennsylvania on Friday.
West Georgia (3-2, 0-0 GSC) used dominant net play in route to their third victory of the young season, totaling nine blocks and 36 kills in the three-set match.
UWG found themselves in a 5-2 hole to begin the match, until a kill from
Marley Staats sparked a 6-1 run for the Wolves, giving West Georgia an early 8-6 lead. After Back-to-back points from Cal (PA) evened the score, both teams would trade runs, before an
Emilee Harris kill started a 5-0 run for UWG, creating some separation with the score sitting at 19-14. A mini run from the Vulcans made things interesting, before a service ace from
Isabela Segoviano won the set for the Wolves 25-21.
Both teams traded blows to begin set two, deadlocking the score at five, before West Georgia broke the set wide open with massive 8-0 run. The Wolves kept the pressure on the Vulcans, as UWG extended their lead to 19-9, seemingly putting the set out of reach for Cal (PA). Looking as though the set was all but over, the Vulcans used an 11-3 run to cut West Georgia's lead to 22-20 and forced the Wolves to burn their last timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, UWG was able to secure the set 25-22 after two attack errors from Cal (PA) and a kill from
Isabella Steffel.
West Georgia narrowly won the race to 10 in set three, with Cal (PA) right behind them with nine, until three straight points from
Sanai Young and Staats gave the Wolves some breathing room. Facing a 13-9 deficit, the Vulcans began to struggle on their swings, making critical attack errors, which put UWG in complete control of the set. Looking to close out the match, Young and Harris did just that as the duo combined for four of the last five points to win the set 25-20.
Harris led the way with 10 kills on a .207 hitting percentage, while Steffel added eight kills and four blocks.
West Georgia will be back in action on Saturday for matchups against Concord and Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
