BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The first track meet of the 2023-24 Indoor season has come to a close as the University of West Georgia Women's Track and Field team wrapped up their season opener at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker on Friday night.
West Georgia competed in 14 events, with
Kristal McQueen stealing the show by breaking the school record in the 3000m race.
3000m Race
McQueen etched her name into the record books by finishing the 3000m in 10:37.05, 17 seconds faster than the previous record. McQueen was joined by
Catherine Greer,
Ama Ahovi, and
Madeline Gaskin in the race as Greer finished with a time of 11:24.92, while Ahovi finished in 11:45.13 and Gaskin finished in 11:55.90.
60m Race
Kira Montefusco and
Kyla Shumpert both qualified for the semi-finals in the 60m race as Montefusco finished in 11
th with a time of 7.83 while Shumpert finished in 7.91, clinching 16
th place.
60m Hurdles
Chioma Uwaomah and
T'oni Birden qualified in the 60m hurdles, by securing second and sixth place. Birden shined in the event, clinching a second-place finish with a time of 9.15 while Uwaomah came in sixth with a time of 9.44.
Long Jump
After her performance in the 60m hurdles, Birden dominated the Long Jump event, winning the event with a 5.85m jump.
Taylor Hampton and
Dasani Minter both picked up top-10 finishes as Hampton came in third with a 5.64m jump while Minter finished in eighth with a 5.33m jump.
Shot Put
Dru Green and
Melita-Marie Roachford stood out in the Shot Put event as the duo finished in ninth and 10
th place with throws of 11.70m and 11.58m.
Triple Jump
Birden's stellar day continued in the Triple Jump event as the sophomore took home her second win of the day after recording a jump of 11.77m.
Haley Trammell joined the party, by finishing in second behind Birden with a jump of 11.70m while Hampton clinched an eighth-place finish with a 11.21m jump.
4x400 Meter Relay
The quartet of
Chloe Leblanc,
Thania Barton,
Shamiya Perry, and
Valeyna Renteria-Silva recorded a 10
th place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:06.70.
Distance Medley
Group A, consisting of Ahovi,
Olivia Fulford,
Joycelyn Tifrea, and McQueen, closed the day with a first-place finish in the Distance Medley with a time of 13:40.58. Group B consisting of Greer, Gaskin, and
Kaitlyn Pierce, finished behind Group A in second with a time of 14:34.06.
West Georgia will be back on January 19 when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the Vanderbilt Invitational.
